After the Flop

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

After the flop, your hand is pretty much defined. Before the flop, you have seen only 2 cards out of the total 7 cards that will eventually be in play. The flop gives you 3 more cards, so now you are seeing 5 out of the 7 total cards that will eventually make your hand. As a result, the strength of your hand will change far more on the flop than it will on the turn or river, with the exception of those times that you draw at a flush or straight.

For instance, before the flop an Ace and King of the same suit, such as AhKh, is a good hand, with potential to become a huge hand. After all, with a great amount of luck it could turn into a royal flush, the best hand possible. A little more likely is something like top pair, with the best available second card, a pair of Aces, with the King as your second card (kicker), still a very good hand. However, if the 3 cards on the flop are 2, 6 and 9, with no hearts, you have nothing but a weak draw. The best you can hope for is that it is checked around, and an Ace or King comes on the turn. Your great potential has turned to trash, and if there is a bet you should fold unless the pot is very large.

At the other end of the scale, you could start with something like a J and Q unsuited, which you would hopefully only be playing in 1 of the last 2 positions or the blinds, which is a weak starting hand. However, if you get lucky and flop something like J, Q, Q, your hand has just gone from marginal to monster. In a case like this, your decision changes from one of “should I stay in” to “how do I get the most money in the pot”.

The result that will occur most frequently is that you put in a raise before the flop with premium cards that have an opportunity to turn into a big hand, or you call a bet in late position with a weak, speculative hand like a suited connector, and once you see the flop, you have nothing. In this case, you must check and fold.

This is the reason for only playing speculative hands in late position for one bet. They will not usually turn into anything and you throw them away, so you don’t want to put in a lot of money which you are probably going to lose. The large premium hands will however end up turning into a good hand much more often, so you raise with those to get more money in the pot because you expect to win it.

After you see the flop, one of several things is going to happen.

1) After the flop, you have nothing. You have no pair, no draw to a straight or flush, and there are cards on the board that are higher than yours. For instance, in late position, after 3 other players have called, you call with a Jack and Queen of 2 different suits. The flop contains an Ace, a 9 and a 3, all different suits. Note that if someone has an Ace, your only hope is that both a Ten and a King come to give you a straight, or both a Jack and a Queen come, to give you 2 pair, or perhaps 2 Jacks or 2 Queens to give you 3 of a kind. In the latter 2 cases, your opponent could be holding an Ace and either a Jack or Queen, so you would still lose. The decision in this case is very simple. Check and fold to a bet.

2) Once you see the flop, you have a huge hand. For instance, you started with a pocket pair, and hit a third of the same rank, giving you a set, or you flopped a flush or straight, or you hit top 2 pair. Once again, the decision is easy, bet and/or raise. There may be an occasional case where you want to slow play, i.e. check and just call a bet. For instance, you raised before the flop, hit a third ace, and it seems unlikely that anybody could have a hand where they could call a bet. However, at the low limits, there is no need to be tricky. The players will call bets and raises even when it should be obvious that they can’t win. One of the worst things that can happen is that you hit your huge hand, while someone else hits a very good second best hand and would have raised, so you cost yourself money. Of course the worst thing that could happen is that you let someone draw cheaply, or for free, and they end up beating your huge hand. This is very expensive, because your slow play cost you the entire pot.

3) You have a good, but not great hand. For instance, you raised before the flop with a pair of jacks, no cards higher than a Jack came on the flop, and there is no flush or straight likely. You probably have the best hand, but it is vulnerable to bad cards appearing on the turn or river. Any Queen, King or Ace that hits the board may give someone a higher pair, and the board could develop into straight or flush possibilities. Ideally, you would like the person on your right to bet, so that you can raise, giving everyone else the situation of having to call 2 bets instead of 1. You may have to try for a check/raise in order to face people with calling 2 bets. You can only try this if you think someone will bet after you check. If you are not sure that someone after you will bet when you check, you should bet. What you want to do if possible is to get players with an Ace, King, or Queen to fold. At the low limits, this is very unlikely when they only have to call 1 bet. Some of them will call all the way to the end with an Ace and any other card hoping that you are bluffing. You may however get someone to fold small cards that would have turned into a straight, a flush, or 2 pair if you had let them draw for free, and this is still a good thing.

4) You have a mediocre hand, such as top pair with a poor second card, or you have the second or third pair. An example of this would be when you call from late position with A7 suited, hoping for a flush draw, and pair the ace, with none of your suit showing, or call with a small pair like 44 or 55. Most of the time, these will be losing hands. Especially if there are several players in the pot, there is likely to be someone with an Ace and a better second card, putting you at a huge disadvantage. In the case of the small pair, you are hoping to flop a set (hit the third card, such as a third 4, or third 5) If there are several people in the pot, and there is a bet before you play, just fold. If it is checked around, and no card comes on the turn that would seem to help anybody, you may want to try a bet and see if they all fold. This is most likely to work if there are only a few people in the pot. The more players there are in, the less likely that they will all fold. You must also be aware of how the players play. If you have a player that will call to the end with a slightly better hand, it may not be worth a bet. Also, if you do bet on the turn, and get raised, fold. Not very many players at the low limits will check raise as a bluff.

5) A situation that happens often is that, after the flop, you either have no made hand, or a very weak made hand, but you have possibilities for improvement. For instance, you call from late position after 4 others have called, with an Ace and 6 of hearts. The flop contains 2 hearts, but no Ace or 6. You are drawing at the nut (best) flush. If you get another heart, you will probably win the pot, otherwise you will most likely lose. To make a decision with drawing hands, you need to consider pot odds, implied odds, and your odds of making the hand you are drawing to, and winning. Note that in many cases it is quite possible that you will make the hand you are looking for, and still lose. And extreme example of this would be hoping to hit a 9 to pair the one you are holding. This would of course lose to anything, pair of Tens or better, and is a bad idea. A more practical example is drawing to an open ended straight, such as 8, 9, T, J, with 2 cards of one suit on board. If either a 7 or Queen hits, you have a straight. However if that 7 or Queen puts 3 of one suit on board you may lose to a flush. As well, if the 2 cards that you have are the 8 and 9, someone else may be drawing to a better hand, with a King and Ace for instance, in which case the Queen that gives you a straight gives them a higher straight at the same time, and is going to cost you some money. As we will see when we talk about counting outs in another article, you must take these possibilities into account when calculating your odds.

There are many more factors that need to be taken into account in each situation. How the other players play, position, the size of the pot, the exact makeup of the flop etc. These will be covered in more detail in future articles. For the moment, this should get you headed in the right direction.

Ness Notes (Jan 23)

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

The NFL conference championship games have had a tendency of not being close since the 1970 merger. Entering yesterday’s games, 35 of the previous 70 conference title games had been decided by 14 or more points and Sunday’s results followed that theme.

The Steelers became the first No. 6 seed (since 1990) to advance to a Super Bowl with its 34-17 win over the Broncos in Denver and joined the 1985 Patriots, as the only teams to reach a Super Bowl by winning three consecutive games on the road.

My free play for Monday is in college hoops, Loyola-Marymount over St Mary’s (10:00 ET). In Monday’s CBB, I’m featuring just one game, a 15* play (71% in ‘06). In the NBA, I’m releasing one of my exclusive 22* plays (highest-rating!), representing my 22nd year in the business. In 20* NBA plays (or higher) TY, I’m 4-1!

Over in the NFC, Seattle’s 34-14 win over Carolina ended the Panthers’ record-tying four-game road winning streak in the postseason and put the Seahawks in the Super Bowl for the first time in that franchise’s 30-year history. The 17-point and 20-point wins makes it four straight years (eight games) in which both title games have been decided by at least 10 points and over the last six seasons, 10 of the 12 games have been decided by at least double digits.

Home teams are now 4-6 SU and ATS in this year’s postseason, with all 10 SU winners also ‘covering’ the pointspread. Six of the first eight playoff games had gone ‘under’ but both of Sunday’s games went ‘over’. Visiting teams have done fairly well since 1990 ATS in conference title games, going 18-14 ATS (14-18 SU). That’s in stark contrast to the 1980s, when home teams went 16-4 SU and 15-5 ATS!

The early Super Bowl line has the Steelers favored by 3 1/2 points with a total of 47. Of note is that the AFC’s No. 6 seed (Pittsburgh) is favored over the NFC’s No. 1 seed (Seattle), a team that went 15-3 this year, including its two postseason victories (much more NFL stuff on Tuesday).

Monday’s NBA action features a six-game schedule but wanna bet that no player tops Kobe’s performance from last night or that no single game will top last night’s “scoring-fest” between Seattle and Phoenix? For those of you who didn’t get the late west scores last night, Kobe scored 81 points in LA’s 122-104 win over Toronto and in two overtimes, the Sonics beat the Suns, 152-149.

Kobe’s point total is the second-highest in NBA history (to Wilt’s famous 100-point game in Hershey, Pa circa 1962), while the Sonics/Suns game was the NBA’s highest-scoring game since Dallas beat Houston 156-147 (also in 2 OTs) back on April 11, 1995!

Kobe had 26 points at the half but his team trailed by 14! LA fell behind by as many as 18 points in the 3rd quarter (laying 6 1/2 by the way!), but led by Kobe’s 27 points, the Lakers outscored the Raptors 42-22 in that quarter. In the 4th quarter, Kobe scored 28 of LA’s 31 points, as LA won 122-104 (too bad if you had Toronto!)

Tonight’s college hoops features a 15-game schedule, just two days after all three of Division I’s remaining unbeaten teams (entering the weekend), lost. No. 1 Duke, No. 2 Florida and No. 9 Pittsburgh all lost for the first time on Saturday. Pittsburgh leads off tonight’s big Monday on ESPN. The Panthers host Syracuse at 7:00 ET, a team that’s lost two straight games to No. 3 U Conn and No. 8 Villanova. Pitt is favored by 4 1/2 points with a total of 133.

No. 5 Texas hosts Oklahoma St at 9:00 ET. The Longhorns have won eight straight games since losing to Tennessee 95-78 on December 17, holding opponents to an average of 51.9 PPG, limiting them to 31.4 percent shooting and forcing an average of 17.3 turnovers per game. Those are some pretty AWESOME stats! The Longhorns are favored by 12 1/2 points with a total of 134.

In the WAC at 12:00 ET, Utah St is at Nevada. The Aggies are in their first year in the WAC, after dominating the Big West (84-20 in conference play) the last six years. Nevada has won 25 games in each of the last two seasons, reaching the Sweet 16 two years ago and the NCAA’s second round, last year. However, both teams are trailing La Tech in this year’s WAC race. Nevada, 8-0 at home this year, is favored by 4 1/2 points with a total of 134.

Website Traffic Analysis for Beginners

Website traffic and log files

Every time someone visits your website information like their IP address, time and date of access and error messages are recorded into log files that are saved on your server’s (i.e. your web host’s) computer. These files can be used to analyze your website traffic. If your web host doesn’t offer these log files, it is well worth it to switch to one that does.

The statistics generated by these log files are important tools for monitoring what your visitors do when they enter your website. Using the information gleaned from them you can track your website traffic and tailor your pages for maximum effect. Below is a checklist of what to look for when analyzing your website traffic.

Website Statistics and what they mean

Page views

A good measure of website activity, it is the number of HTML pages served. If your visitor goes to ten pages on your site, 10 page views will be generated. This gives a measure for your content. Generally, the more page views you receive the better the content. Visits (unique visitors)

A trip to your site by one person, no matter how long they stay there or how many pages they view. If they leave and come back, another visit will be generated. Here is a measure of your web presence. It shows the amount of exposure your website is receiving from the web.

Most popular pages (i.e. top pages)

Tells you which pages your visitors request most. Helps you learn what works or what subject matter is generating the most interest! Be sure to note the content that is generating this interest and build upon it.

Average number of pages per visit

If this is low, you know your site sucks! A visitor should want to stay on your site for awhile and this equates to page views. You need to do some revisions if your page views are low (i.e. below 4-5 pages). But don’t give up! Just keep working at it until that number goes up!

Referring pages

This is an important one because it tells you where your visitors link FROM, who has links to your site, and what search engines you’re listed with properly. Here is where you can gain a great amount of insite into your audience. The who, what and where of your source of visitors.

Browsers used

Tells you what browsers people are using and helps you know how to design your web pages so that people can use them!

Implementing your website statistics

Once you understand what your visitors are doing you can make your changes, wait one week, and then analyze your website traffic again! Look for improved stats and make your plans accordingly. Understanding your visitors is the first step in becoming a good webmaster.

These sites diminish the travel costs, but still retain of a Vegas gambling casino, however today you can game in the comfort of your own beloved surroundings.

How to Select the Right Operating System for Your Web Hosting

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Windows or Unix/Linux – which operating system should you choose for your web hosting? This question is often asked when webmasters start looking for web site hosting. The operating system you choose can make a big difference in your business plans as your website grows.

Windows-Based Web Hosts

Windows-based servers use programs such as Microsoft Access and MS SQL for “back-end” operations. Scripting is also handled by Microsoft technologies such as ASP (Active Server Pages) and VBScript.

Perhaps more importantly, Windows-based servers can easily be managed and multiplexed by using .NET technology. They offer excellent support, security and integration for Microsoft products.

They’re a good choice for either shared or dedicated hosting, but the features offered by Windows servers do come at an extra cost which may be an issue for small businesses.

The reason there is often a higher cost associated with Windows servers is because the software they are based on costs the hosting company money. They have to buy them all from Microsoft, and that cost gets passed on to you.

This is in comparison to the free software technologies which are generally used on Unix or Linux-based servers.

Unix/Linux-Based Web Hosts

Unix and Linux are two different operating systems, but because they work essentially the same way, we’ll consider them as one for the purposes of this article.

One of the most important characteristics of Unix-based servers is that they can handle a large amount of traffic. Unix is a robust operating system and can easily handle hosting multiple websites on a single server.

They’re also very flexible and the services running on a given webserver are easily customizable. Unlike Windows, Unix servers aren’t limited to special remote administration programs. Any computer with an internet connection can login to a typical Unix server using freely available software.

A lot of webmasters choose Unix over Windows because of the server uptime. Windows servers can provide very good uptime as well, but to do so the web hosting company has to be proficient with Microsoft systems. There tend to be more hosts who are familiar with Unix than with Windows on the hosting side of things.

So Which is the Right Choice?

For the average website, a Unix hosting plan is often the best choice. However, if you need to use Microsoft technologies such as Access or MS SQL databases, or ASP or VBScript scripting languages, you should opt for a Windows host.

Note that even though Frontpage is a Microsoft product, it is supported by both Windows and Unix hosts. If you’re considering a Unix host and using Frontpage, make sure they offer “Frontpage Extensions” support.

Encryption and Security with SSL

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

When it comes to accepting online payments and other sensitive information over the web, normal HTTP just doesn’t cut it. It’s an insecure method of communication where everything is sent over the wire in cleartext – it’s completely trivial for anyone in a network administrator position at a business or ISP to gain access to the network, and most networks are even vulnerable to ’sniffing’ by non-privileged users of the network.

Things are bad enough that you really shouldn’t even transmit any passwords without taking additional security measures, unless the things the passwords give access to are entirely trivial – put simply, as a webmaster, you need to be worried about encryption and security. But how can you add them to your website? Well, it’s not as difficult as you think, because there’s a standardised way of doing it: SSL.

What is SSL?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is a method of using cryptography to make sure that communication between a server and a client is secure: in other words, data sent can’t be intercepted or tampered with in any way. SSL works using a variety of encryption methods, but the most important feature is that SSL certificates effectively certify that a site is the real thing, which helps to prevent spoofing. When SSL is combined with HTTP, it becomes HTTPS (Secure HTTP), a powerful way for web browsers and web servers to send sensitive data back and forward securely.

If all that was over your head, maybe I should put it to you in the way that your customers will. SSL is what makes their web browser come up with the little padlock symbol that means your website is secure for them to enter sensitive information into. If there’s no padlock, they don’t want to do business with you.

However, you should also be aware of what SSL is not: it isn’t a complete security package. If you transmit data over HTTPS and then store it in a database unencrypted when it reaches your server, someone with access to the database will still be able to easily retrieve the data. SSL is not the answer to everything – it’s simply a way of avoiding anything happening to the data while it’s ‘out there’, travelling across the Internet. Of course, your customers are unlikely to realise that (they think the padlock works like magic), but you at least should.

Levels of Encryption

There are three main levels of SSL encryption: 40-bit, 128-bit and 256-bit.

It’s very important to emphasise at this point that 40-bit SSL is now outdated and deprecated: you would be a fool to use it. The only reason 40-bit encryption was available to begin with was because the US government was initially afraid of exporting cryptographic algorithms that were strong enough to be used against them: 40-bit was strong enough for most web uses, but still weak enough that they could break it by brute force with their powerful computers. The US was persuaded to relax the restrictions when the government realised that they were doing nothing but forcing IT development to other countries, but by then there had been widespread adoption of 40-bit encryption.

Now, years later, there’s really no reason to be using it. You should go for 128-bit as a minimum, and preferably 256-bit – what you can afford will likely be dictated by the value of the goods you sell. If you think anyone is likely to try to break your encryption, you should get the best you can.

How Do I Use SSL?

If your web host supports SSL, then it should already be all set up for you (if you host your website yourself, then you might like to take a look at the tutorials at modssl.org to get it installed). However, before you can use SSL, you need to get certified – that is, buy an SSL certificate from one of the trusted certificate authorities. The big three are VeriSign, GeoTrust and Thawte, but they charge relatively high prices.

The whole thing works more-or-less the same way as buying a domain name, and, in fact, many domain registrars resell certificates – you can often get a better deal from them than you would from one of the big companies. You can often find perfectly good certificates for as little as $30 per year, if you shop around.

Colors in Website Design

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

=================================================== Since people associate particular colors with different emotions, the colors used on your website can have a psychological effect on visitors to your site. By using specific colors geared towards the emotion you want to invoke, you can actually increase product sales.

Here are some colors along with the emotions and symbols they stimulate:

1) WHITE- purity, innocence, peace, perfection, chastity, sterility, cleanliness. In general, white creates a cool and refreshing feeling.

2) BLACK- night, space, authority, sturdiness, reliability, power, constancy, prudence, wisdom, classy, elegance, submission, mourning, demons, witches. Black is a controversial color as it can symbolize both good and evil.

3) RED- love, excitement, warmth, heat, fire, blood, passion, power, aggression, action. Use red as an attention grabber. It works better as an accent color rather than a background one.

4) PINK- romantic, affection, sensuality, tenderness, calm, soft hearted, softness, femininity. Pink tends to reduce aggression.

5) BLUE- sky, ocean, water, temperature, ice, coolness, mist, shadow, travel, freedom, truth, solitude, wisdom, trust, loyalty, peaceful, calmness, intelligence, dedication, masculinity. Different shades of blue convey opposite meanings. Light blue is peaceful while dark blue is depressing.

6) PURPLE- royalty, dignity, luxury, wealth, sophistication, feminine, passion, romance, sensitivity, coolness, mist, shadows, mysterious, mystic.

7) GREEN- money, calm, envy, greed, nature, life, youth, renewal, hope, vigor, fertility, rebirth, freedom, guilt. Different shades of green have different meanings. Dark green-cool. masculine, conservative, wealth. Emerald green- immortality. Olive green- peace. Green is the easiest color on the eye.

8) Yellow- light, purity, understanding, brightness, warmth, playfulness, creativity. Lemon yellow is the most eye fatiguing color. Yellow can increase irritability so yellow should not be used as a main color, only as an accent. Yellow enhances concentration.

9) ORANGE- autumn, youthful, fire, warmth, contentment, fruitfulness, wholesomeness, strong, generous, endurance, strength, ambition. Orange is the color most associated with appetite so it would be a good color choice for a website selling food products. Orange also makes a product seem more suitable for everyone and more affordable.

10) BROWN- wood, comfort, strength, earth, solid, reliable, credible, maturity, humility, conservancy. Light brown conveys genuineness.

11) GRAY- exclusivity. Enhances the psychological response of other colors.

In general, red, orange, and yellow are exciting colors while purple, blue and green are calming ones.

Use the color that symbolizes the emotion you want to convey as the primary color on your website. Add 1-2 other colors to reinforce this emotion. The colors used for your background, header, graphics, text, highlighting, headlines, etc. will all contribute to your website’s influence on your visitors.

Great Skiing Conditions across the European Alps

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Weve had about 1.5 meters of snow in the last seven days. It was so heavy that lifts were shut, the train has been stopped at Chamonix train station and not traveling to Switzerland. Some roads have been shut and snow warnings issued.

This is in direct contrast to 2 seasons past, when we experienced the incredibly hot February weather, earth showing on ski slopes, and reports that climate change could mean the conclusion of snowboarding in Europe. Highlighting this the report from winter 2006 predicted that climate change would make ski holidays too expensive for many snowboarders, with a 3rd of resorts shutting with the disappearance of glaciers. Glaciologists say that it is unimaginable to attribute the annual variations in the snow to the results of climate change.

We may be experiencing the biggest downturn in 25 yrs, and the Pound Sterling has headed to new lows versus the Euro, however the snowboarding is fantastic, and the latest reservations highlight that skiers are enthusiastic to revel in the great snow conditions with our ski accommodation full. This season is probably the greatest in nine winter seasons, and a lot of skiers are saying that it is the finest ski snowboarding snow in ten winters.

Nevertheless recall that this amount of snow means raised risks of avalanche.

The Most Efficient Debt Relief Choices

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Many individuals realize there are a regalia of debt relief picks available to them, but how do you go about selecting the accurate choice for your situation? The best selection may depend on your unique position.

One of the most common debt relief solutions employed today is the debt consolidation resolution. This solution is generally used when the person has a large total of outstanding debts to credit card companies and other creditors that are charging them a high interest rate for the balances carried on their accounts. Debt consolidation works by having out a single loan product, whether it is a credit card or a individual loan, and paying off the debt that the person is running with that loan. This method is really effective when the person can secure a much lower interest rate for the loan than they were paying on all of their debt accounts.

Another popular debt relief resolution applied across the country is the creation of a debt management plan. A debt management plan is for individuals that have an tough, but not unsurmountable, load of debt that they would like to reduce or wipe out over a period of time. This option can be produced by the person or by a debt guidance company that the person has engaged to give them advice. A debt management plan is only a resolution for debt relief when the person is rightfully serious about eradicating their debt and work to complete the plan within a rational time frame.

Negotiating with lenders to subdue the amount of debt owed is a risky proposal; so numerous people do not use this option. Talking Terms with lenders is only an effective debt relief resolution when you owe a great amount of money to a creditor and you suffer a tough financial hardship, such as the loss of a job or a medical inability to work, that would leave you unable to pay much against your account every month. If the lender believes that you have the power to pay back them by giving some of your luxuries, they will probably resist negotiating with the debtor to lower the amount that they are owed.
